october 2023
thanks for subscribing to my newsletter! here’s a september recap, and some information for october and onwards
upcoming booking form
as a perk of subscribing to this newsletter, here is an early access link to my booking form for november and december. usually i just book out one month at a time, but i am taking some time off for the remainder of the year (will talk more about that below), so november and december availabilities will be super reduced.
i will only be booking from the newsletter link for november + december, and prioritizing larger projects during this time. appointments will not be first come first serve, but rather based on my interest in the project/piece.
i will be traveling in january (more about that below too), but i will be returning to normal booking practices in february 2024.
news flash its new flash
check out my new flash spread for october and onward :) available once in black and white, and once in color

i’m also super interested in pursuing this shaded style. will give priority bookings to anyone who is interested in the grapes specifically.

reminder: i do not hold/reserve flash, and i do not repeat flash. these designs are first come first serve. all of my up to date booking policies are in my booking form.
cool tats from september
here’s just a few tats i did last month that i really resonated with, would love to do more like these. september was a big month of revisiting flash i had already done in black and gray, but in color. i’m super happy with how each one of these came out and i am really hoping to do more older flash in color in the coming months. i’ll probably color some more that i’d like to revisit, to get the ball rolling.
also had a ton of fun revisiting my vine motifs. i think this was my first time doing one in color!

time off
so as mentioned above, i’ll be taking some time off (from tattooing) in november and december. for context, i’ve basically been full-time tattooing without a solid break since the new year. i took a few days off for travel in march and a couple days off in july to enjoy some summer stuff, but haven’t really enjoyed a prolonged break. for the last few weeks, the inclusion of some cool illustration work has had me running 10-12 hour work days on my days off from tattooing, and i feel like i’m getting a bit burnt out.
burnout is normal for artists, and this isn’t the first time i’ve experienced it. i’ve found the best thing to do is 1) not panic, and 2) listen to your body and your mind. burnout is a sign to slow down, back up, and reassess. and perhaps make some changes. i will still be doing some tattooing, but mostly wrapping up multi-session projects and focusing on large, ambitious, and experimental projects.
i feel like november + december will be a good time for me to relax, reset, and spend time with my loved ones. it’ll be cold, and i’ll be focused on the holidays and family time for a lot of it. but i have some really fun and interesting art ideas that i’ll be focusing on during that time as well. i hope you’ll enjoy what comes out of this period of rest + rejuvenation :) here’s some of what i have planned:
complete prep work on “heaven ii” (tentative name), a follow-up to my zine from last year (“heaven”)
i’d like to crank out a whole bunch of new flash, and really explore the pencil/shading style i’ve been playing with a little bit here and there
i’ll finish my “artifacts” painting series that I’ve been working on since may, and start + finish prep work on the accompanying zine and print
i have been meaning to get into ceramics since college, and have been talking about taking classes for a long time, so this is a great opportunity to try it out
re-assess the way i present flash online and in-person to try and make my flash selection process less obtuse
mystery painting series :o

works in progress
here’s some stuff i’m working on :)
artifacts
i’ve pulled out a few more paintings this month, bringing the total up to 11. check out the new paintings below!
i’m running into this problem with this project where i would like the color palettes to remain diverse from each other so they appear distinct when on the wall together, but i am driven towards the same color palettes. i think i need to tape these paintings up on my wall and look at them all together when i am planning the palette for my next piece as the series grows.
anyways, only 9 more to go and super stoked to be over the halfway point here! really excited to see them all up together. starting to think about frame choices. still eagerly looking for a place to show the work when it is finished, so drop me a line if you have any leads.

heaven ii
as i mentioned above, i’ve started work on “heaven ii” which will be a follow up to my zine from earlier this year, “heaven”. heaven captured my favorite flash pieces from 2022, and revisited them with a simple 2-color riso palette. i really enjoyed the act of selecting the works and arranging them into nice compositions, as well as breathing new life into them with color, so it’ll be really fun to continue that effort with my drawings from 2023. i’ll likely finish all the work to print these by the end of this year, but won’t get around to printing + binding + releasing until february 2024. i would love for this to become a yearly thing.
mothra chest piece
David came by in the beginning of september for a second session on this crazy mothra chest piece. we had planned to power through and finish it, but i think we both learned the value of breaking a tattoo into multiple sessions after our first session in july, and we decided to push the color off to a third session. really excited about the progress on this one and stoked to finish mid-october!

here are some scans of sketchbook spreads from last month

armored core vi
like many other from soft heads, i got into armored core vi this last month with little to no experience or understanding of these games. i was skeptical of how much i would like a mech game where a lot of the action is menu based loadout tweaking, but whew was i wrong. this game grabbed me and pulled me in. it’s far less obtuse (gameplay-wise) as a lot of from soft games, and actually brings you in gently and provides a lot of tutorials so you understand what all the stats mean. and once you get going, you just can’t stop. the game encourages and rewards trying out different builds, replaying missions, and even replaying the entire game. i’ve never played ng+ on any game before but i’m on ng++ now and don’t see myself putting this down until i s rank every mission. there’s tons of additional content in ng+ and ++ to really make it worth the replay. it’s definitely got that trademark from software difficulty, but it really rewards an understanding of it’s systems in a way that i have yet to experience in a soulslike game. definitely pick this one up.

isabella and i popped over to astoria to grab some indian food the other night, and this spot was great. we each ordered the 3 course prix-fixe which was super fairly priced, as well as some naan and pakora. i started with a butternut squash soup, for the fall vibez, and followed up with a delish lamb korma. isa got the mulligatawny soup and the chicken tikka masala. for a prix-fixe, we were both surprised at the portions and filled up super quick. we got a lil rice pudding and rasmalai for desert and popped out. it was super good, quick, and affordable. definitely recommend popping over to astoria for this the next time you want some indian food
neptune’s lair by drexciya
spotify presented this album to me on a silver platter, and i couldn’t recommend it more. i had never heard of drexciya, but this album has been my soundtrack for the last month. whether it’s biking around, drawing, tattooing, playing armored core, or whatever, this album is perfect. i know it’s an older one but i feel like it’s pretty slept on so everyone should definitely check it out.
honorable mentions
i’ve been biking around a lot lately since i just replaced my bike that was stolen last summer. so, uhh, i recommend prospect park? haha. i’ve also been in my fall bag listening to the glow pt. 2 by the microphones and alex g. isa and i watched mother, do the right thing, and ghost in the shell at home this month and i’d def recommend all three. maybe a soft recommend on mother.
